U
nlike their New Mexico counterparts a few miles away in Santa Teresa and further up the Upper Valley into New Mexico; El Paso high school soccer is still going strong. As the season winds down the playoff selection and seeding will depend on the final matches and a team can get hot at the right time to capture one of those seeds.
The night was cold... not sub-freezing like the Upper Valley has seen for much of the past four months... but, the action on the field was electric. The Canutillo and Loretto players were making good passes and setting up shots on goal.
However, in a close game the Loretto girls were victorious 2-1 with a 2-1 margin in the shootout.

Canutillo took an early lead as they scored first at the 9-minute mark on a shot by Daizy Perez. Loretto's goal came at the 47-minute mark by Ale Trejo. The defenses prevailed as the teams traded threats up and down the field. Trejo and Beatriz Mesta scored in the shootout for Loretto and Canutillo's only goal in the shootout was by Yvonne Chavez. Canutillo had 50% more shots on goal than did Loretto at 12 - 8 but could not convert and went scoreless for most of the match.
Loretto's record is now 9-7-1. Canutillo's is 7-8-1 (2-3 in district).
