hile Westside rivals Coronado and Franklin battle each other for Westside bragging rights Santa Teresa, Gadsden, Anthony and Canutillo all are fighting for playoff spots in 5 different district races.
With the regular season winding down with as few as four games left before the district playoffs begin teams are making their moves to insure a tournament run.
This year it is the girls basketball teams that are rolling up the wins. The Coronado Lady T-Birds are fresh off of two impressive victories. A 48-37 victory over Bel Air and tonight's crushing win over Montwood by a score of 60-25 to move their record to 24-5 overall and 13-1 in district 1-5A play.
But, the Franklin Lady Cougars had a let-down and got blasted by Hanks 57-36 before coming back strong to crush Bel Air 62-31 to bring their recrod to 10-3 in district and 21-7 overall.
Sitting in the cat bird seat, which is perfect for the Lady Eagles from Canutillo; the Eagles have a strangle hold on the district 2-4A race with a perfect 10-0 record in district. Two impressive wins have keep the Lady Eagles flying high. Canutillo just skunked San Elizario 42-24 and tonight had a great win over Del Valle 39-29 to move to 2--5 overall.
Meanwhile some of the guys are having a tougher go of it. But, not Canutillo. The Eagles are flying high after a 53-47 defeat of Del Valle to move their record to a perfect 9-0 in District 2-4A and an overall record of 21-3.
Another Upper Valley team has a perfect recrod in district as well. The Santa Teresa Desert Warriors are 7-0 in District 5-3A in New Mexico after their desicive win over Silver City 47-30. The Warriors are now 14-7 overall.
Franklin is positioning themselves for a run in the 1-5A District race with a strong 63-32 mauling of Bel Air to move their record to 8-4 in district and 16-10 overall.
Coronado is having a rebuilding year and it shows. The T-Birds lost to Montwood 43-38 to fall to 2-10 in district and 9-16 overall.
